handmade.
A few months back, I shot at a studio in Baltimore called Studio M.
Cool ass people there, one of whom made this lens by hand out of
parts of a very old film camera. It was cool as shit to use but it did
give me a headache because the image was reversed.

Day #44: don't judge me

whenever i experience an allergy sneeze attack, stuffing tissue paper up the nostril that's itchy tickly keeps the air passing through from making me sneeze. it usually takes a while for the tickly itchy feeling to disappear but sometimes it happens when i have to be at work and somehow i get all self conscious about what others are gonna think so i remove the tissue and suffer instead. so i've changed my mind about how i will handle this. i'm just gonna leave it in. And this change starts right here as you stare at this photo.  -H.B.

Day #45 assignment: kiss (viewer's suggestion)

You don't even know me.
(Note: Sometimes I go out looking like a hot damn mess with a 12 year old
band t-shirt, biker boots and sweats. It's probably asking to be judged. -L)

Day #43: little fish in a big pond

"sometimes i wanna swim out to the sea,
going where the current takes me,
i wanna live a life that's free, yeh free,
but i don't wanna go
all by myself...."

Click. And enjoy "the quiet place."

(About the photo: I shot this sometime in '08 at this hidden beach in Hampton, VA.)

I am always thankful for the paths that cross mine. I learn more and more about myself and realize I know nothing. It's humbling and uplifting all at the same time. -H.B.

Day #40: a candle

i discovered after i lit this candle that the wax doesn't melt. it just disintegrates. that's alien technology.
this candle belongs to my cousin's 21st birthday cupcake tier. i showed her this photo and she said (to quote rihanna) "it shine bright like a diamond." -H.B.

Day #39: androgynous

Walk like a man.
(Note: Doing this shoot was TONS of fun. Had help from a good

Day #38: a baby's laugh

i studied a bunch of images of babies laughing and i discovered that when i tried to mimic some of the simplest ones i ended up looking like i was in pain. i even tried laughing like a baby to see if that would help. kinda. sorta. hahaha. it was fun and definitely a challenge! i thank viewer participation for this assignment. bring it on folks!!! -H.B.

Peek-a-boo!! NOW, LAUGH YOU LITTLE RUGRAT!!
(Note: This is how I usually try to make a baby laugh. Peek-a-boo works every time. They're like, "Oh snap! Where did she go?! Oh shit! She's back again! She straight disappeared for a second there... Yo Timmy! Come check this shit out. That lady right there can disappear and come back... I swear she does that shit like it's nothing."
...
Or at least, I wanna feel like that's what the baby is thinking.
I'm excited that we got to do a viewer-submitted photo!! Let's do more! -L)

Day #37: laundry

hehehe.... -H.B.
"life is like laundry... loads of fun!" - anonymous

I want to apologize for not posting a photo yesterday and giving the assignment. You see... what had happened was...
...
There was this spaceship.
There was this spaceship and I was shooting my photo and I was really excited because I had laundry and it was gonna be a cool photo and I was gonna post it. I was about to post it but what had happened was the spaceship came and I was like, "OH SHIT! SPACESHIP!" And then this blue light came down and I was all, "Whaaaa-" And the alien that came in the light was all, "Wassap, wanna go for a ride?" And I was all, "Eff yeh!!"
And like... the universe is HUGE! I had to pee really bad the whole time which made the trip not as cool as it could have been.
I taught the aliens how to moonwalk and they appreciated the irony.
Anyway, so I was out all night with the aliens and they were cool. They all say hi.

So as soon as I got back, which was like twenty minutes ago, Helen Backwards suggested that we do "a baby laugh" as the assignment because someone on Facebook suggested it.

I'm up for the challenge so...

FINALLY!! (updated 11Feb)

Eff the laundry. It's bath time.
(Note: Late as fuck... but here it is.  -L)

Day #36: dance

this is documented proof that i make a dance face. -H.B.

Love as though you've never been hurt
Sing as though no one can hear you
Live as though heaven is on earth.” - Souza

day #37 assignment: laundry

In the pale moonlight.
(Note: All the low-light images are because I'm a little obsessed
with figuring out all the different trickeries for shooting in low light.
Shadows are cool for me right now, too. -L)

Day #34: sunday confessional

i've been taking photos of nanimals all weekend. it's challenging to get a well composed image. they move around so much or you never have your camera ready in time. I think i've gotten quicker and stealthier in capturing the moment. wachu think? -H.B.
Day #35 assignment: in the kitchen

This is Sophia.
This was part of a set design for a concept I had to shoot a woman stealing this woman's life energy. She hung from chains and blood dripped into a pool in which the thief was sitting... collecting the energy. The photo is on my site still. This is a reoccurring theme in my darker photos. It's always someone taking from someone else; consuming their insides.
Conceptualizing these types of shoots comes very easily to me. Sometimes I just give the ideas away to other photographers and see what they come up with.  But I think it's time to challenge myself and conceptualize a shoot where one person gives freely to another. It would be quite the exercise.

Day #33: where is your peace?

i've begun my teacher training at atma bodha yoga. -H.B.

“If you cannot find peace within yourself, you will never find it anywhere else.” ― Marvin Gaye

Day #34: Sunday confessional

We haven't spoken in years.
(Note: I spent all day trying to really think about where my peace is.
I woke up early and thought about it. I mulled over it during lunch.
Dinner time came and I still couldn't find it. I can't even remember the
last time Peace and I hung out. In lieu of lying in this project, I give
you the blank I've drawn in answering the very question I asked. -L)

Day #32: hug your pet

just being. - H.B.
"Be alert as you watch a dog at play or at rest. Let the animal teach you to feel at home in the Now, to celebrate life by being completely present. The dog is still in the natural state. And you can easily see that, because you have problems and your dog doesn't. And while your happy moments may be rare, your dog celebrates life continuously. You just watch the tail . . . with some dogs you just look at them — just a little look is enough — and their tail goes . . . "Life is good! Life is good!" And they are not telling themselves a story of why life is good. It's a direct realization." - An Excerpt from Guardians of Being by Eckhart Tolle and Patrick McDonnell

I don't fits. I still sits.
(Note: I was going to do a full-on art shoot with this guy but thought...
nah, I'll wait til he's full grown... which will be around July. -L)
